Technical: Website Layout Change

Shinra Labs has been working on changing to a new layout to replace our old layout. The old website layout needed to be retired and a new layout to take its place.

As you may have noticed, we are now using a new website layout. The new layout is called Juno Tech, a reference to the city of Juno in a game called Ragnarok Online, which the layout theme is based on. Hope you enjoy the new layout. Note that the layout was not made by Shinra Labs.

Technical: Website Outage

If you visited Shinra Labs between March 1st and March 4th, you may have noticed the Shinra Labs website was experiencing technical difficulties and you were given a webserver standard 404 page saying the page could not be found or you may have received a "no response" message. This was due to our host's hardware problem. Their hard disk drive crashed and could not save all the data. During the outage, the hard drive was replaced and the site became responsive again, but data was not restored. On March 4th, the host finally recovered the Shinra Labs website using the most recent weekly backup they had.

Despite their best efforts, I am personally upset that they did not send out an email to the affected site accounts about the hard drive crash and that the affected websites could experience outage for X amount of days. Instead, they just kept it in the host's member area "Server Status" page as if to hide it from those who don't log in to the host's member area often.

I will be saving all the data from this site and transferring it to my private webserver and may abandon this host when the domain expires until I can find a better host, one that communicates with members when major hardware failures, like hard drive crashes, affect sites. I'd much rather be pestered in emails from a host about these hardware problems than to be kept in the dark and have to find out through the members area about what happened.

General: Blackout and Censorship

You may have noticed that the website was blacked out late January 18, 2012 to about 6:45 PM January 19, 2012 and that now there is a black censorship strip across the banner.

This is intentional. Users beware, the US Congress is attempting to pass a bill called the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) that sound nice in the title, but violates all internet users rights to view sites that may or may not contain copyrighted material. Some of you may have heard of the site MegaUpload. You'll notice that the site no longer responds to your request when you try to visit their site. MegaUpload was shut down because they "willfully distributed pirated movies, often before their theatrical release, and other illegal copies of copyrighted works, earning the company over $175 million in illegal profits through advertising revenue. Megaupload is also charged with money laundering by paying uploaders through an "uploader reward program," and paying other companies to host the pirated content" for five years. There were 7 MegaUpload staff members charged, and 4 arrested.

Fair? I think not! MegaUpload tries it's best to remove copyrighted videos, but its up the the users of the internet to report videos that slip by. This is just one example of the US Government over stepping their bounds and violating the rights of everyone. Imagine a world without Wikipedia because Wikipedia contained copyrighted materials, despite their notices about copyrighted material needing citation and proof of permission and all that legal stuff. Imagine all those fansites shutdown because it was deemed by the US Government that it had copyrighted material all because someone "said so."

Fight against SOPA and PIPA. Fight for your right to view whatever site you want. Don't let the US Government control what you can and can't view or share. Click on the censorship strip to learn how to fight against SOPA and PIPA, no matter if your a US citizen or not.

General: HTML5 and CSS3

Shinra Labs is experimenting with features from HTML5 coding and CSS3. If you wish to take advantage of these features, the optimal browser to use is Google Chrome. We definitely recommend Google Chrome for use on the Shinra Labs network.

With Google Chrome, you get a new scrollbar. Say goodbye to the plain, old, boring scrollbar and hello thin, no-arrow, scrollbar. It works like the regular scrollbar, use the Up and Down arrow keys, the scrollwheel, Home and End keys, PageUp (PgUp) and PageDown (PgDn) keys, or Spacebar (to page down) or Shift+Spacebar (to page up). You can even click on the thin track to scroll, or click and drag that scrollbar up and down the track.
Not only can you get this new scrollbar on our site, but we animated the ยค to change colors, to add a little flair to the site.
